First decision: maintain or heat on demand?
A household that holds the pool near one temperature for weeks is solving a maintenance problem. A household that heats only before weekend swimming is solving a recovery problem. On-demand use often favors more output because the temperature change must happen inside a limited window. Maintenance use puts more emphasis on efficiency, covers and controls.
Second decision: how large is the temperature lift?
Subtract the normal starting water temperature from the desired set point. Heating from 78°F to 82°F is a 4°F lift; heating from 62°F to 82°F is a 20°F lift. For every 10,000 gallons, each 1°F increase represents about 83,400 BTU in the water itself. A large lift can overwhelm a heater that looks adequate on a mild-day chart.
Third decision: what fights the heater?
Walk the pool at the time you expect to heat it. Is the surface open to wind? Will heating continue after sunset? Is the pool uncovered overnight? Does a waterfall or raised spa keep exposing more water to air? Is the equipment far from the pool? These details can be more important than adding another thousand gallons to the estimate.
Fourth decision: what can the property support?
A gas heater is not correctly sized if the existing meter and piping cannot supply it. A heat pump is not correctly sized if the electrical service, airflow clearance or cool-weather performance does not fit the site. Solar collection depends on unshaded collector area and roof orientation. Sizing the appliance and sizing the installation are one job.
A practical shortlist method
Create three columns: acceptable, comfortable and fast. Put a slower, lower-output option in acceptable; a model that meets the normal schedule in comfortable; and a higher-output option in fast. Estimate ideal recovery for each using gallons × 8.34 × temperature rise ÷ output BTU/h. Then compare efficiency, rated conditions, infrastructure changes and installed quotes.

When to lean larger
More recovery capacity is valuable when the pool is used on short notice, the target is much warmer than the water's natural temperature, the season is cool, the site is windy, or a spa must recover quickly. It may be less valuable when a cover is used consistently, the climate is mild and the heater maintains rather than rescues the temperature.
A final choice should be checked against the exact model's performance table and installation manual. That last step catches the problems a generic chart cannot: altitude derating, minimum flow, gas pressure, electrical requirements, clearances and temperature-dependent heat-pump output.
