Capacity and COP answer different questions
Capacity, stated in BTU/h, describes the rate of heat delivery. COP describes energy efficiency at a test point. A smaller unit can show an attractive COP yet take longer to recover a large pool. A larger unit can deliver more heat while posting a different COP. Compare both columns.
Why the condition line matters
A heat pump harvests heat from outdoor air. Air temperature, humidity and pool-water temperature affect operation. Ratings from two products are not directly comparable if one uses warmer or more humid test conditions. Look for the exact air, relative humidity and water conditions beside each published capacity and COP.
Turn COP into kWh
A 900,000-BTU water load equals about 263.8 kWh of heat. At COP 5, the simplified compressor-energy estimate is 52.8 kWh. At COP 3.5, it is 75.4 kWh. Multiply by the local electricity rate and add circulation and auxiliary energy. This calculation shows why a modest COP change matters across a season.
Do not treat the catalog point as a seasonal average
The unit will encounter mornings, afternoons, rain, dry air and changing water temperatures. A seasonal budget should use more than one case. Model warm-weather COP, expected COP and a cool-weather case from the manufacturer's performance data.
Noise and airflow are efficiency issues too
Blocked discharge air or inadequate clearance can undermine performance and violate installation instructions. Landscaping that hides a unit must not choke airflow. Poor placement can also make normal fan and compressor sound more noticeable, encouraging owners to disable the system when they need it.
Questions worth asking a seller
Ask for output and COP at the coolest air temperature you expect to use, electrical requirements, minimum and maximum water flow, defrost behavior, required clearances and warranty conditions. If only one best-case COP is available, the operating-cost comparison remains unfinished.
